A study of 1st-instar nymphs representing 119 of the 122 currently recognized taxa of pocket gopher lice of the genera Geomydoecus and Thomomydoecus resulted in the recognition of numerous valuable taxonomic features enabling reliable differentiation for a surprisingly large number of these lice. These characters are discussed primarily at the species complex level, with mention of specific differences where pertinent. A key is given for the identification of the currently recognized 26 complexes of pocket gopher lice.
