Ninety-three feather lice of two species were collected from 50 Dippers in Central Wales. The dispersal of one species was in excellent agreement with a negative binomial model.

The role of the louse Trinoton anserinum (F) as an intermediate host of Sarconema eurycerca (Wehr) was investigated in swans. 8.3% of healthy swans carried one to twelve lice per bird, dispersed contagiously. Injured and lead-poisoned swans were more heavily infected. The mouthparts appear designed to penetrate the hosts' skin; the mandibles are robust and asymmetric, and the maxillae have a serrated intercutting surface. 22% fed exclusively on blood and 33% on both blood and feather. All life-cycle stages fed upon blood and the barbs and barbules from down feathers; hooklets from contour feathers were only found in adults. 9% of lice were infected with developing nematode larvae in the head, thorax or abdomen. Lice labelled with Technetium 99 m moved towards the scapulas and the wings. Lice were found to be highly active and were mobile.

The frequency distributions and population structures of Mallophaga infesting a number of procellariiform species have been described. Frequency distributions conform with a negative binomial distribution which suggests a "fundamental model" upon which, for example, more accurate statistical analyses (by means of precise data transformations) may be contemplated. Examination of Mallophagan population structures - especially those obtained from a series of consecutive samples - is a means of investigating population dynamics and may even   provide an insight into the relationship between the ectoparasite and the host itself (see, for example, Fowler & Price, 1987, for a review of recent work in this field).

The Mallophagan populations of British breeding procellariiform species were described by Fowler & Miller (1984). However, only 7 leach's Petrels Oceanodroma leucorhoa were deloused in that study. This paper descibes the frequency distribution and population structure of Mallophaga collected from a much larger sample.

A1 - R. A. Price SP - 43 EP - 49 AB -

The frequency distribution of an elongate feather louse Philoceanus robertsi found on the Wilson's Storm Petrel Oceanites oceanicus conforms well with a negative binomial model. Its infestation density and frequency distribution are similar to those previously described for another elongate louse Halipeurus pelagicus found on the Storm Petrel Hydrobates pelagicus. An anaysis of the population structures of the lice reveals that both species have highest reproductive rates during the breeding season of the host, but both structures become dominated by adults, suggesting an ageing and declining process, towards the end of the hosts' breeding season. Philoceanus robertsi is also found on the Storm Petrel, but at a much lower density. Its reproductive cycle on this host appears to be in synchrony with that on the population on Wilson's Petrels. Explanations in terms of niche differentiation are offered.

Feather lice and feather mites were collected from Procellariiform birds in Shetland during July, 1981. Lice were found on 80% of the 44 Fulmars examined, 100% of the 4 Manx Shearwaters, 97.5% of the 240 Storm Petrels, and 43% of the 7 Leech's Petrels. Halipeurus pelagicus was collected from both Storm Petrels and Leech's Petrels, and Philoceanus robertsi, previously reported only from Wilson's Storm Petrel, was found on Storm Petrels. Frequency distributions of the numerous ectoparasite species conformed well with a negative binomial distribution. The population structures and ecology of the ectoparasites are discussed.
