Abstract: This contribution is an attempt to further structure the Brueelia-complex on the basis of morphological characters. The genus concept employed differs fundamentally from Clay’s commonly accepted 1951 model, with its exag- gerated emphasis on shared taxonomic features rather than features that separate taxa, which were consequently undervalued. From an evolutionistic view this standpoint had to be abandoned sooner or later. The consequence is a departure from a schematic preference for larger genera towards a finer, character-based organization of taxa. Initially some questions of nomenclature are discussed. It is shown that (1) »Guimaresiella Eichler, 1949« and (2) »Acronirmus Eichler, 1953« are names that are not available according to the Code, and that (3) it is not the Palearctic Azure-winged Magpie Cyanopica cyanus (Pallas) but the Neotropical Cayenne Jay Cyanocorax cayanus (L.) that is the type host of Olivinirmus cyanus (Carriker, 1963).

A list of the Brueelia-complex taxa with discussions and/or with newly described genera (32, including 22 n. gen.) and species (153, including 49 n. spp. and 2 n. sspp.), along with their type hosts, is given with corresponding page numbers in the Appendix (p. 212). A neotype has been erected for »Nirmus olivaceus Burmeister, 1838« ex Nucifraga caryocatactes macrorhynchos (C. L. Brehm). Among other things, attention is drawn here to the prob- ably recently extinct genus Mohoaticus n. gen., with two new species from the Hawaiian Mohoidae. »Docophorus hamatofasiatus Piaget, 1890” is a species inquirenda (p. 116). Couanirmus n. gen. is erected on »Nirmus angulatus Piaget, 1880«. However, a comparison of type material could not confirm that the specimens of the series created as the foundation for this are actually identical to this species (p. 123 f.). Painjunirmus Ansari is unquestionably a synonym of Brueelia Kéler, while its genotype, P. pengya Ansari, 1947, with an uncertain host provenance, must be temporarily categorized as a species inquirenda (p. 155 ff.). Taxonomic research into the Brueelia-complex is still ongoing.
