Even so, it remains a rare, protected species, and one susceptible to varied threats, including diseases. It has a specific parasitofauna, comprising only a few specific species retained with the last hosts in the restitution process, and some others acquired from other ungulates, or via environmental interactions. The current data on parasitic arthropods originated from the winter season, and less frequently, from autumn and early spring. The present study contains the first information on the occurrence of arthropods in the European bison (n = 6) in the summer season, which is the period of their increased activity. Data on the seasonal and populational dynamics of ectoparasites have been verified; specific parasite species (Demodex bisonianus, Bisonicola sedecimdecembrii, and recently described Demodex bialoviensis) and typical parasite species (Chorioptes bovis, Ixodes ricinus) have been recorded. The data refer to the information from other study periods, summarizing and valorizing data on parasitic arthropods in the form of a global checklist. These arthropods occur in European bison frequently (prevalence reaches up to 100%), but they are present in small numbers, and do not present a burden for the host; only sometimes, with high intensity of infection, they cause parasitoses (chorioptosis, mallohagosis). However, as an effect of regular activity, by penetrating the skin of the host, they create gateways for secondary infections, and hematophagous parasites (e.g., ticks) can be vectors of pathogens that can be hazardous, even at low infection levels. The identification of the parasitological threats faced by European bison is not only important from the standpoint of the study object, i.e., the Białowieża Forest European bison population, from which the existing bison population of Europe has been derived, but also the fact that their transfer to different parts of Europe can entail the additional transfer of their parasites.&lt;/jats&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

In this study an individual of the White Stork (Ciconia ciconia L.) that was found in Pomerania in 2005 was examined for ectoparasites. 253 specimens of lice of two species: Colpocephalum zebra (237) and Neophilopterus incompletus (16) were recorded; sex-ratio in the lice infracommunity was approximately 1:1, while the ratio of imagines to juvenile stages was ca. 5:1. Parasites showed clear host site preference &amp;ndash; most specimens (91 %) of C. zebra were found on the wings; while N. incompletus and the rest of C. zebra were observed on other parts of the body (neck, breast, flanks, back). This study is a first record of such high number of lice observed on the White Stork in Poland.&lt;/p&gt;

The faunistic research was on four species of chewing lice, including Bisonicola sedecimdecembrii from European bison (prevalence &amp;ndash; 46%, mean intensity &amp;ndash; 11 specimens), Bovicola bovis from cattle (29%, 5), Bovicola caprae from goat (17%, 75), Werneckiella equi from horse (4%, 76). Chewing lice from the examined animal species showed topographic specificity on their hosts and preferred the body sides (in European bison) or the neck and back area (in the other hosts). Individual species were characterized by distinct seasonal dynamics, and the greatest intensity of infestation was usually observed in winter. The morphological studies included seven species of chewing lice: Bisonicola sedecimdecembrii, Bovicola bovis, B. caprae, B. longicornis, Damalinia meyeri, D. ovis, Werneckiella equi . Chewing lice of ungulate mammals have considerable morphological similarity, however, the range of variation of morphometric traits and differences in body proportions are significant.&lt;/p&gt;

Despite the fact that the majority of Anoplura are believed to be monoxenic, many species within Hoplopleura may be oligoxenic. In addition, the occurrence of more than one parasite species per host species on individuals has been confirmed. As such, a precise species identification of the parasite, especially of the nymphs, is of high significance. The study is based on the material of 245 sucking louse specimens taken from 179 individuals of the striped field mouse Apodemus agrarius collected between 2008 and 2017. The study employs scanning microscopy to provide superior quality resolution of the studied traits. The study presents the first record of the characters of the nymphal stages of H. affinis, one of the common Eurasian species of the genus. Additional aspects of the biology and the host&amp;ndash;parasite relationship of H. affinis are presented, e.g., female, male and nymphs of lice, showing different preferences in the choice of location (topography) on the host body. In addition, a global checklist has been made of all the species of Hoplopleura found parasitizing rodents of the genus Apodemus. Generally, the ranges of the occurrence of lice of this genus coincide with the geographic distribution of typical hosts, although this has not always been confirmed by local studies.&lt;/jats&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

An analysis of 376 specimens from three species of the genus Hoplopleura (H. acanthopus, H. affinis, H. edentula) identified 13 individuals with changes in the number and size of the setae on the sternal plates of the abdomen and irregularities in the structure of the plate itself (3.5% of the collection). The above anomalies do not invalidate the taxonomic decisions.&lt;/p&gt;

Trichodectes melis is a specific ectoparasite of the European badger Meles meles. Distribution of this chewing louse is little known, although presumably it coincides with the range of its typical host. In Poland, it has been found in only a few stands in the western part of the country. It has recently been observed in the area of the Białowieża Primeval Forest, where 81 specimens of T. melis (48 females, 7 males and 26 nymph forms) were collected from two female European badgers, mainly from the fur of the head area. No symptoms of infestation were observed.&lt;/p&gt;

The European bison became completely extinct in natural conditions at the beginning of the 20th century, and the currently existing wild populations are a result of successful restitution and reintroduction. Only three European bison-specific parasites have survived until now, including the chewing louse B. sedecimdecembrii, described from the female by Eichler (1946). This paper redescribes the adults and describes the juvenile stages for the first time, based on the analysis of 1,203 specimens of B. sedecimdecembrii from 115 bison from Poland.       &lt;/p&gt;
