Abstract:

Hitherto it was known that especially Dennyus hirundinis and D. vonarxi can drink the eye fluid of their hosts. On the 20th of May 1975 in Eisenach, I myself was able to collect two male imagos of D. hirundinis from the eyelids of a sick swift Apus apus apus. Eichler (1940) observed on a cow 'hundreds of Bovicola bovis which were present on the eyelids and apparently drank eye fluid'. Furthermore, B. bovis was observed drinking at open fly wounds. Further observations: Mallophaga Gallacanthus kaddoui on the peacock Pavo cristatus drink eye fluid, and the birds also preen these lice from each other.
