Abstract:

This paper describes the occurrence and effects of parasitism by several Mallophaga species on laying hens in industrial poultry operations. The survey was conducted in 44 poultry farms in municipalities of the State of Sao Paulo as well as inneighbouring areas, within the period of January 1988 to December 1990. Menacanthus cornutus was the prevalent species, followed by M. stramineus, Menopon gallinae and Menacanthus pallidulus The use of'a sticking tape to make the collection was quick and efticient. To have these ectoparasites under control, it is recommended a continuous surveillance, individual treatments and in some cases high pressure sprays.
