Ectoparasites of large wild mammals (deer and wild boars) and lyme Borreliosis - search for Borrelia burgdorferi in more than 1400 ticks, lice, pupipares and fleas

Abstract:

Within an epidemiological study on the importance of hematophagous arthropods for the Lyme borreliosis in France, we looked for B. burgdorferi sensu lato, by indirect immunofluorescence, in more than 1 400 ectoparasites collected on 131 large wild mammals (15 red-dears, 59 roe-deers, 54 wild boars and 3 foxes) caught or killed in winter mainly in Brittany, Vendee and Sologne. Thus were examined 1 251 Ixodid ticks: 953 Ixodes ricinus (among them, 3,7 per cent of nymphs and adults positive), 257 Dermacentor reticulatus adults (2,3 per cent positive), 38 Haemaphysalis concinna adults (1 positive) and 3 Ixodes hexagonus females (2 positive). Were also studied 83 Anoploura: 73 Haematopinus suis (2 positive) and 10 Solenopotes burmeisteri (negative); 65 Pupipara: Lipoptena cervi (1 positive); 7 Siphonaptera: 3 Pulex irrants and 4 Paraceras melis (negative). If the presence of B. burgdorferi in Anoploura and Pupipara needs to be confirmed, it is the first time that this agent is found in Haemaphysalis concinna.
