Abstract:

Clay and Meinertzhagen (1939) described the genus Hopkinsiella to accommodate one new species of louse found on the Kikuyu white-headed wood-hoopoe—Phoeniculus bollei jacksoni (Sharpe, 1890)—of the bird family Phoeniculidae. Tendeiro (1957) described a second species of Hopkinsiella, parasitic on a bird species of the same family. Subsequently,
Tendeiro (1961) described one more species and reviewed all the species included in the genus. We have found that the name Hopkinsiella Clay & Meinertzhagen, 1939 is preoccupied by Hopkinsiella Baba, 1938, a genus of nudibranchs – marine gastropod molluscs of the order Opisthobranchia (Baba, 1938).
This homonymy has gone unnoticed in at least six publications dealing with the genus Hopkinsiella: Tendeiro (1957, 1961), Ledger (1980), Hopkins & Clay (1952), Eichler (1963) and Price et al. (2003). The Code (ICZN, 1999: Art. 60.1) reads: “A junior homonym must be rejected and replaced either by an available and potentially valid synonym or, for lack of such a name, by a new substitute name”. Since there is no synonym available for Hopkinsiella Clay & Meinertzhagen, 1939 (Price et al., 2003), we propose a new name to replace this genus of chewing lice, according to Art.
60.3 of the ICZN (1999).
