Infestation of the water vole by sucking lice in the Volga-Kama Territory

Аннотация: На водяной полевке паразитирует Hoplopleura acanthopus (Burm.) — переносчик туляремии. Малочисленные популяции, обитающие на материковых террасах, зара- жены слабо, сильная зараженность наблюдается в пойменных биотопах, где водяная полевка достигает большой численности и где сосредоточены очаги туляремии. Рас- сматриваются сезонные изменения зараженности в связи с периодами в жизни водя- ной полевки, возрастной и половой состав вшей, зараженность при разном уровне численности хозяина, нахождение Н. acanthopus на контактирующих с водяной полев- кой млекопитающих.

Abstract: Hoplopleura acanthopus (Burm.), a vector of tularemia, parasitizes the water vole throughout the Volga-Kama territory. Not numerous populations of the water vole, which inhabit continental terraces, are poorly infested with sucking lice. A high infesta- tion is in flood-plain biotopes, where the water vole is very abundant and foci of tula- remia are concentrated. The paper deals with seasonal changes in the infestation by lice during different periods in the life of the water vole, the connection of infestation with age and sex of the host, age and sexual structure of lice populations, infestation of water voles at different levels of their abundance, the occurrence of H. acanthopus on mammals which are in contact with the water vole. The role of H. acanthopus in epi- zootology of tularemia is discussed.
