Abstract:

Avian taxonomy, long considered settled in its fundamental lines, has recently come into turbulent movement by the results of newly applied analytic methods since in many cases the conclusions drawn from them do not agree with the classical (or the "accepted") system. Former attempts to use comparisons of the system of mallophaga (and some other parasites) with the current arrangement of birds for taxonomic decisions have been doubted or refused by Stresemann and some other ornithologists. As there are some striking coincidences with the results of molecular studies, a re-appraisal of the parasitological evidence appears to be useful. The history of the "parasitophyletic" approach in host taxonomy is briefly surveyed. Possible objections to the applicability of parasitological comparisons and / or conclusions to avain classification are throughly discussed here. A number of higher bird taxa the position of which is considered from a parasitophyletic point of view is grouped, according to the coincidence with other judgements, into four catagories, viz. A. general concordance, B. discordance, C. discordance with the arrangement of both "schools", and D. mallophagological for indications taxa incertae sedis without DNA evidence. The present considerations suggest that future studies on phylogenetic parrelisms between mallophaga and their avian hosts offer additional chances to consolidate the knowlege of group relationships.
