Abstract:

During the February - December 2002 period, 20 birds belonging to the species Nystalus chacuru (Bucconidae) and Galbula ruficauda (Galbulidae) in the avian order Piciformes, were captured in the Fazenada Água Limpa, Brasília, DF (15°57'S, 47°56'W) and searched for ectoparasites. A total of 56 chewing lice (27M & 29F) (Insecta: Phthiraptera: Ischnocera: Philopteridae) were collected, fixed, slide-mounted and labeled following conventional methods. Three species were identified, with two of them of the genus Picicola being new to science. Males of the third species, identified as Mayripholopterus nystalicus Mey, 2004 were described and illustrated for the first time. [continues ....]
