Abstract: | Paper written in Spanish Resumen English title: Lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) of the Andean Coot Fulica ardesiaca (Gruiformes: Rallidae) at Colta lake, Ecuador Abstract: Lice of wild birds are parasites which depend on their hosts to complete their life cycle. This research was aimed to document the diversity, prevalence, abundance and intensity of lice infection in the Andean Coot Fulica ardesiaca in Colta lake, Chimborazo province, Ecuador. Sixteen individuals of F. ardesiaca were captured and manually examined to collect ectoparasites. We identified three species of lice: Rallicola advenus, Pseudomonopon pilosum and Fulicoffula longipila. The percentage of prevalence was 62.5% for all birds sampled. Rallicola advenus was the most frequent lice species, being present in 100% of the infested birds. We found multiple-species infestation in one male and one female, and two males were infected by two lice species, P. pilosum and R. advenus. Our findings are equivalent with genus- level descriptions of lice load in coots in South America, North America and Europe. |
