Abstract:

Crossbred or indigenous chickens farmed in a free-range system are hardy animals. The biggest threats they face are from lice outbreaks. One of the main ways of introducing these ectoparasites to your clean flock is by bringing in new chickens from an unknown background. It’s important, therefore, to quarantine new chickens for a period while you look for signs of lice infestation. In communal farming areas, chickens from numerous homesteads often mingle, and this can lead to lice from infested birds spreading to clean birds. It is essential to keep chicken coops clean, because dirty, moist housing creates a perfect environment for the proliferation of lice. If you discover lice in your chicken coops, spray the houses down with Karbadust mixed with water. You will need to spray three times in all with a seven-day interval.
