Obligate ectoparasites of cattle: lice and mange mites.

This chapter briefly describes the taxonomy and life cycle of lice and mange mites. The clinical presentation and effects on cattle performance of chorioptic (Chorioptes bovis), sarcoptic (Sarcoptes scabiei), psoroptic (Psoroptes ovis) and demodectic (Demodex bovis and D. ghanensis) mange, and the clinical presentation, prevalence, transmission, parasite coinfections, and effects on cattle performance and behaviour of lice (Bovicola bovis, Haematopinus eurysternus, Linognathus vituli and Solenopotes capillatus) infestation are discussed. The treatment and control of lice and mange in cattle, including ectoparasiticides, biological control, nutrition, housing and clipping, are described.
