Abstract:

Tinea capitis, folliculitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and pediculosis capitis are four common scalp conditions. Although tinea capitis and seborrheic dermatitis are found more commonly in patients with skin of color and highly textured hair, all of these conditions have special diagnostic or management considerations in these populations. This article reviews the diagnosis and management of these common scalp conditions.

Key Points

  • Tinea capitis is seen more commonly in patients of African descent and requires treatment with oral antifungal agents.
  • Staphylococcus aureus is the most common cause of scalp folliculitis.
  • Management of seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp in patients with highly textured hair requires medical management that is respectful of cultural hair care and styling practices
  • Pediculosis capitis is seen less frequently in people of African descent than in other populations.
Overview
Tinea capitis is a common dermatophyte infection seen primarily in children between the ages of 3 and 7 years, but may also be seen in adults. It affects Black and Latinx (Latine) children disproportionately.5,6Trichophyton tonsurans is the most common cause in the United States, whereas Microsporum canis is the most common agent in Europe, Asia, and New Zealand.6M. audouinii and Trichophyton soudanense are common culprits in West Africa, and Trichophyton violaceum and T soudanense were.....
Overview
Folliculitis encompasses a spectrum of diseases distinguished by inflammation of the pilosebaceous unit.13 It can occur anywhere on the body except on the palms or soles where there are no hair follicles. There are many types of folliculitis, with common etiologies including both infectious and non-infectious causes. Bacteria, fungi, viruses, and Demodex mites can all cause infectious folliculitis on the body, with Staphylococcus aureus being the most frequent causative agent.14,15 Follicular.....

Overview
Pediculus humanus capitus, also known as the head louse, is a wingless insect. An ectoparasite, it feeds on the blood of its human host. Transmission of the head louse is primarily via direct contact, but they can also be spread through sharing of items such as hats, brushes, or combs. Infestation with head lice is common; the Centers for Disease Control estimates that there are 6 to 12 million cases of pediculosis capitis each year in the United States, occurring primarily in children ages 3....

Summary

There are many common scalp diseases that manifest in patients of color. Although diagnosis and management of several common diseases have been discussed here, it is important to reiterate the importance of being knowledgeable about hair care and hair styling practices so that the clinician can gain the patient's trust and obtain a proper history. Journal articles by Roseborogh and colleagues and Bosley and colleagues provide excellent overviews of these hair care practices.35,36 Grayson and....
