First documented record of Saemundssonia fraterculae Overgaard, 1942 (Psocodea, Phthiraptera: Philopteridae) in Belgium

Abstract

Saemundssonia fraterculae Overgaard, 1942 (Psocodea: Phthiraptera: Philopteridae) is documented
from Belgium for the first time, based on examined material from Atlantic Puffin Fratercula
arctica Linnaeus, 1758. Specimens were recovered from a carcass found on the beach of Ostend
(West Flanders) on 14 January 2026.

Samenvatting
Saemundssonia fraterculae Overgaard, 1942 (Psocodea: Phthiraptera: Philopteridae) is voor
het eerst in België vastgesteld, op basis van onderzocht materiaal afkomstig van de Atlantische
papegaaiduiker Fratercula arctica Linnaeus, 1758. De exemplaren werden verkregen uit een
kadaver dat op 14 januari 2026 op het strand van Oostende (West-Vlaanderen) werd aangetroffen.
Résumé
Saemundssonia fraterculae Overgaard, 1942 (Psocodea: Phthiraptera: Philopteridae) est signalée
pour la première fois en Belgique, sur la base de spécimens prélevés sur un macareux moine
(Fratercula arctica Linnaeus, 1758). Les spécimens ont été prélevés sur une carcasse trouvée
sur la plage d’Ostende (Flandre occidentale) le 14 janvier 2026
