George Spencer (1888-1966) was born in Yercaud, in southern India. He received his education there, at the same time developing an intense interest in insects and snakes. He took his B.S.A. at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph and then served overseas during World War I. He received his M.Sc. from the University of Illinois in 1924 and joined the University of British Columbia as an assistant professor of zoology. He taught general zoology, histology, and, most importantly, entomology at the University for the next thirty years or more. Spencer considered himself an applied entomologist and his research focused on practical investigations on ants, earwigs, carpet beetles, stored-product insects, and household and garden pests of the Vancouver area.
