Published Taxon Remarks:
Kim et al. (1963) advocated that E. suturalis is a polytypic taxon. The host species are certainly phylogenetically diverse. They are in three genera, and the species of Spermophilus are members of five subgenera (Spermophilus, Callospermophilus, Xerospermophilus, Ictidomys, and Poliocitellus) (Hoffmann et al., 1993). [ex. Durden, L. A., Musser, G. G. 1994. Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History 218: 1-90]. Lectotype male was recognized and designated by Johnson (1958): “M holotype” on slide bearing label “Enderleinellus suturalis Osborn, Herbert Osborn, on Spermophilus 13-lineatus, 4/24/84, Ames, Iowa” in the National Museum of Natural History Collection, Washington,D.C. Considerable morphological variations exist among louse populations of many different host species (Kim et al. 1963). [ex. Kim, K. C., Pratt, H. D., Stojanovich, C. J. 1986. The Sucking Lice of North America, p. 241: Pennsylvania State University]

Citation information points to the most recent interpretation of the taxon name (not the original, which is absent from the sucking louse checklist).
