Holotype female and allotype male from Oryzomys palustris palustris, Oatland Island, Chatham Co., Georgia, 26 February 1948, collected by Public Health Service personnel, in the National Museum of Natural History Collection, Washington, D.C. This is the North American representative of the Hoplopleura quadridentata group, which are parasites of rice rats in South and Central America and southeastern United States north to Delaware. Worth (19.50) published the first record of this species from the United States, incorrectly identified as H. quadridentata, based on specimens collected in Hillsborough County, Florida, on Oryzomys palustris.
