Published Taxon Remarks:
As noted above, H. pacifica previously was incorrectly considered to be a synonym of H. oenomydis with the result that many erroneous records of the latter species parasitizing domestic Rattus in various parts of the world have appeared in the literature. [ex. Durden, L. A., Musser, G. G. 1994. Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History 218: 1-90]. The type series consists of five males and seven females collected from Rattus exulans hawaiiensis, Hawaiian Islands. The lectotype of H. pacifica was designated by Voss (1966) and is in the Bernice P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu. A considerable confusion surrounded the names H. oenomydis Ferris and H. pacifica Ewing since the North American species was called H. oenomydis by Pritchard (1947). Johnson (1964, 1972) clarified taxonomic status of H. pacifica and other related species basis of both adults and nymphs, restricting H. oenomydis to African rodents. [ex. Kim, K. C., Pratt, H. D., Stojanovich, C. J. 1986. The Sucking Lice of North America, p. 241: Pennsylvania State University]
