Published Taxon Remarks:
Although native deer (Odocoileus spp. - Artiodactyla, Cervidae) in western North America are atypical hosts for this louse, large infestations sometimes resulting in host death have been reported on these mammals (Brunetti and Cribbs, 1971; Foreyt et al., 1986). [ex. Durden, L. A., Musser, G. G. 1994. Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History 218: 1-90]. Described from several females and males taken off sheep, Abeokuta, Southern Nigeria, Africa, and these syntypes were reported to be in the British Museum (Natural History) and the Ferris collection, in the Department of Entomology, University of California, Berkeley. However, they have not been located in these repositories. The populations of L. africanus from sheep, goats, and gazelles are considered separate subspecies (Weisser 1975). [ex. Kim, K. C., Pratt, H. D., Stojanovich, C. J. 1986. The Sucking Lice of North America, p. 241: Pennsylvania State University]
