Abstract:

The A. refers first about the lack of literature existing on this subject. With reference to his previous work of 1952, dealing with Cuclotogaster heterographus (Nitzsch), a chicken epizoic Lipeuridae, the A. illustrates herewith Stenocrotaphus gigas (Taschenberg), another chicken epizoic Goniodidae, transmitted on such hosts as Numida. He gives a short account on about ten breedings at the institute of Zoology in Genova grown up by means of an electronic thermostat at an average temperatur of 35-38°C, and moistene [sic] kept generally with water baskets, from Sept. 1949 to Dec. 1953. Breedings lasted as maximum up to 24 days. Some interesting biological date [sic] have been gathered: the greatest number of eggs laid down by one f [FEMALE] was 14; the embryo develops in an average of 7 days and the first neanid stage after 8 days; the adult males lived a maximum of 19 days, [ADULT FEMALES] 24 days. The full life cycle is considered to be of one month.
