Revisions of the genera of Mallophaga - I. The Rallicola-complex

The various genera included in the Rallicola - complex are listed [see below]. The variation within a group of related species parasitising one host family (the Rallidae) is discussed, and the characters and range of variation in the species from other host groups are compared. The phylogenetic origin and possible explanation of the present distribution of the Rallicola -complex are considered. In conclusion it is suggested that all the groups under discussion should be contained in a single genus Rallicola. A new species of Rallicola (R. sarothurae) is described and two species renamed. A key to the known species of Rallicola is given.
