Comments:
Vince Smith and I were both visiting The Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London in early January, 2005. Earlier I had been in correspondence with Dame Rothschild with regards to her writing an introduction to my paper on Theresa Clay. Upon arriving at the Museum I telephoned Dame Rothschild and she invited me, my wife and Vince to meet with her at her at Ashton Wold. She invited us for lunch and would have her chauffeur pick us up at the railway station. As an aside she mentioned that she was in poor health and that our meeting may have to be in her bedroom and hoped that I would not be offended. I assured her that I was never offended at an offer to meet a women in her bedroom, to which she laughed heartedly and declared that"... men are all alike, young and old."We also discussed Clay's relationship with Meinertzhagen. It was agreed that we would arrive about noon on Monday, 17 January. On Friday, 14 January, Dame Miriam's secretary telephoned and advised me that Miriam had a turn for the worst and that we should delay our meeting, unfortunately my wife and I were returning to California on Friday, 21 January and the meeting was cancelled. We learned of her death just before leaving London. I had the great fortune of meeting Dame Miriam, first when I was a graduate student, and then twice, in the 1970's, when I was at the Museum working with Theresa Clay. by Robert C. Dalgleish
